In 1890, Benjamin Holt and Daniel Best experimented with various forms of steam bulldozers for farming. They conducted separate trials in their respective companies.

In 1915, Holt's Caterpillar® crawler bulldozer was used by the Allied forces in World War I.


In 1925, Holt Manufacturing Company and C. L. Best Bulldozer Company merged to form Caterpillar Bulldozer Company.


In 1931, the first Diesel Sixty bulldozer rolled off the assembly line in East Peoria, Illinois. It was a tracked bulldozer with a new and efficient power source.

In 1950, the Caterpillar Bulldozer Company was founded in the United Kingdom, the first of many overseas companies. The aim is to help manage foreign exchange shortages, tariffs, import controls and provide better service to customers around the world.

Caterpillar's breakthrough emissions control technology, ACERT®, fully meets EPA standards without sacrificing performance, reliability or combustion efficiency.


In 2005, Caterpillar was committed to sustainable development and helped in a number of disasters around the world, such as the Asian tsunami disaster, the United States Gulf hurricane and the South Asia earthquake. In the face of these disasters, Caterpillar employees, dealers and company leaders have come together to donate machinery, funds and supplies to disaster areas for emergency relief and reconstruction, and to make a commitment to all victims to seek a path of hope and development.


In 2006, Benjamin Holt, one of the founders of Caterpillar and the inventor of the first crawler bulldozer, was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in recognition of his genius and entrepreneurial spirit
